21 Soil fabric: The microstructure of a clay soil (that is, the geometrical arrangement of the individual particles), and the forces or bonds between those particles, may vary greatly, even between soils with nearly identical mineral compositions. Moreover, superimposed on the microstructure, there is frequently a macrostructure consisting of cracks, fissures, partings of different soil material, layering, and other types of discontinuity. This macrostructure, and the microstructure of the soil between the macrostructural discontinuities, are together known as the soil fabric.
